For the Love of Money
Message from the End Human Trafficking Team
People are exploiting other people for money in every nation, including the countries where Aglow International has a presence. “For the love of money is the root of all evil….” 1 Timothy 6:10, KJV. Human Trafficking takes many forms. While sexual exploitation gets much of the attention, equally horrible are labor trafficking; removal of body parts; abuse of elderly people; and forced marriage. It is not just girls it is also boys, poor and rich, young and old, persons with and without addictions. Human Trafficking is taking place everywhere; for example, in homes, hotels, restaurants, factories, fields, at major events, and in many other locations. Furthermore, trafficking is not always among strangers; it frequently is within families and among friends.
According to the United Nations’ International Labour Organization, human traffickers victimize an estimated 27.6 million people worldwide.
- 77%, 21.3 million of all victims are in forced labor
- 23%, 6.3 million of all victims are in sex trafficking
- 57%, 15.7 million are men and boys
- 43%, 11.9 million are women and girls
- Within forced labor:
- 33%, 7.0 million are women and girls, and 67%, 14.3 million are men and boys
- 73%, 5.5 are adults and 27%, 5.8 are children
- Within sex trafficking:
- 78%, 4.9 million are women and girls, and 22%,1.4 million are men and boys
- 92%, 5.7 million are adults, and 8%, 6 million are children
There are many human trafficking statistics, and they vary widely; for example, another source, Walk Free, states that on any given day in 2021, 49.6 million people were in modern slavery, with 27.6 million people in forced labour and 22 million people in forced marriage. So it is clearly evident that prayer is needed to End Human Trafficking.
Beginning June 12 and ending July 19, there is a major international event taking place in sixteen cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, when 48 teams from 6 continents will be competing in 104 matches to become the World’s best soccer team. In the competition will be first-time teams from Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan, and past winners from Brazil, Germany, Argentina, France, Uruguay, England, and Spain.
The World Cup tournament will bring millions of fans to those 16 cities, including Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Kansas City, Mexico City, and Toronto.
Months ago, the host cities began planning and launching actions to prevent trafficking, arrest traffickers, and care for rescued survivors. A sample headline follows:
Houston launches anti-human trafficking public awareness campaign ahead of World Cup. Billboards declaring Houston a “No Trafficking Zone,” in both English and Spanish, are going up across the city.
Let us pray for all of the people working to prevent human trafficking, potential and actual victims, the predators, the buyers, the rescuers, and those who will be caring for the rescued. Furthermore, let’s pray that the World Cup will occur without trafficking and be a show place for Aglow’s End Human Trafficking Ministry.
The Lord does not overlook the rights of the oppressed or the injustice done to the innocent.
