Aglow History
Since its small beginnings at a women’s tea in a downtown Seattle hotel in 1967, the ministry of Aglow International has touched literally millions of women and men around the globe. I am one of those women.
In anticipation of Aglow’s upcoming 59th Conference, held in Washington DC, this month’s Aglow History article peeks into the past to the year 1983, to the same city of Washington DC in which Aglow held its 9th ever conference.
In 1979, the September/October issue (#42) of Aglow Magazine featured a small section on page 11 that announced, “Aglow is growing! The following groups were affiliated in June-July 1979.” It is quite amazing to see how far and wide the Lord moved in Aglow in the 12 years after Aglow started in 1967!
This week, a former Aglow staff member, Susan Boucard, visited our Headquarters offices. It has been more than 20 years since she had been to Aglow Headquarters, and those who remembered her were delighted to see her again, and those who came on staff after she left enjoyed getting to know her during her visit.
Who remembers the Aglow Magazine? As I write this, I am imagining hundreds (or maybe thousands) of women around the world raising their hands saying, “Me! I remember!”
Aglow International has long been considered a “Network for Caring Women” and this was even more evident by the story discovered in an Aglow Connection newsletter from March, 1997.
One of the greatest blessings that former Aglow staff members gifted to our current (and future) Aglow staff is the preservation of so much of Aglow’s historical records. There are days when opening a file cabinet feels like opening a time capsule that the Lord sealed, ready and waiting to open at “such a time as this.”
