Aglow Prison Ministry
Recently, we received a testimony from Neva Welsh, Alabama Area Team President and part of the Aglow Prison Team, reporting on the breakthrough and great hunger of the inmates in a local prison. As the team came this particular Sunday, they were greeted by a correctional office who said, “I am so thankful you have arrived as so many have been asking if you were here.” Neva said, “We were so grateful to hear this as we had only had one meeting with them and they remembered us.”
Tensions had been running high among the inmates and many of the dorms were on lockdown all week. Because the inmates are allowed to attend a religious service once a week, the morning service had been packed.
The women who attended the Aglow service were mostly new with two regulars. Neva said, “We had a time of praise and worship where we intermingled sharing and it was a good time together. The women accepted us and drew close to the Lord, and opened up to us. As we shared, we gave powerful words and examples of God’s love and provision. They were very attentive and appreciative.
Each one declared that they had personally invited Jesus in and had a personal relationship with Him. There was a sweet time of prayer and fellowship with the ladies asking for more prayer for the current situation in the prison. It had been a rough week with targeted attacks on those in authority with many altercations and disturbances. Because each dorm holds between 75-125 women in one room, there was a high level of stress.”
“As they began to share prayer needs, almost everyone asked for protection. They were afraid. We prayed, binding the enemy’s attacks and thanked God for keeping them safe. They asked for continued prayer and we gave our word that we would continue to speak peace into the situation and protection over them.”
A chaplain assistant said that there were many more women who wanted to attend, but because of the dorm lockdowns, they were not allowed to come. Neva said, “We realized that the devil was mad because we brought God’s Presence into his territory. Now women were walking a new walk that was filled with hope for a future. We will continue to call upon the Name of Jesus to bring a turnaround into this facility that causes a shift in the atmosphere. We look forward to our next time where we can lift up the Name that is above all names and partner with our sisters in Christ to see them lifted up in their faith.”
If your Aglow group goes into a local prison or jail, we would love to hear how God is bringing a Light into a dark place through your team.
