Each month, for the last 5 years, an Aglow team has journeyed to Washington, DC for a time of prayer, intercession, declaration, and to build relationships. This plan was birthed in the heart of Nancy McGuirk, US Regional Director, Mid-Atlantic Region.
Nancy shares the history behind the journeys, The original request from the Lord some years ago was to ‘establish a national presence for Aglow in Washington, DC.’ When we ‘establish a presence’, to me it means that we need to let Washington, DC know that Aglow is here. I believe that begins with relationships.
Over time we have developed relationships with many people who are influential in Washington DC ministries including the FRC (Family Research Council), AIPAC, Israel Allies Caucus, the Congressional Prayer Caucus, and the Museum of the Bible who looks at us as a significant partner in praying this museum into reality. The list continues with the DC YWAM team, David's Tent project, the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation, Understanding the Threat, the Center for Security Policy, the Capitol Hill Prayer Partners, the American Christian Trust, and JHOP. We have also built relationships with the National Prayer Embassy, Men for Nations, and Traditional Values Coalition. We are starting a new relationship with a contact in the DC office of CBN, and several other ministries.
As you can see, there are LOTS of praying ministries in DC. We do not need to re-invent the wheel, but we can encourage and hold up the hands of those whose call is to inhabit the city. One ministry called Aglow ‘a cup of cold water on a hot day.’
The trips are primarily about relationship and establishing connections for Aglow. We want to be invited to the table when it comes to prayer, and we need to be counted on when there are major events going on. Relationship gives us access, influence, and positions us.
To be candid, if we do covert prayer and nobody knows we're around, then we come and go and no presence is established. It is blowing these ministries away that we are committed to sending in teams from all over the country on a regular basis.
Praying covertly at Arlington, The Pentagon, monuments, at the Supreme Court or wherever the Lord leads has value. Certainly do that, but remember what the Lord has asked us to do. Briefings are important. We want to hear the issues. We want to hear the struggles and minister to those needs. It equips our men and women to go home and pray and talk about what's going on.
When we go on these journeys, we make our time count. We change the atmosphere, establish relationships, and God is doing it.
